Round-the-world teen sailor Jessica Watson sailed into her home town of Mooloolaba to a rapturous reception on Sunday, with thousands of people lining beaches and shoreline to welcome her back.
Three weeks after becoming the youngest person to sail solo and non-stop around the globe, Ms Watson completed the more relaxed sail from Sydney to her Queensland home with crew for company.
‘It was totally amazing to see all those little girls and kids out there waving signs and flags today. That was really special,’ she said.
Ms Watson, who completed the 23,000-nautical mile global voyage just days before she turned 17, said she was looking forward to enjoying her mother’s cooking and sleeping in her own bed after eight months away. The schoolgirl, whose bright pink 33-foot (10-metre) yacht was greeted by about 70 boats and jetskis, said she was still getting used to the intense media attention after spending so many days on her own.
‘I’m still the same person in a lot of ways but I’m also eight months older so that makes a big difference to a 16 or 17-year-old girl,’ she said. ‘I’ve been dreaming about a day like this out the front of Mooloolaba for a very long time so it’s just great to be home.’
