Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua Is Dead

Nigerian leader Umaru Yar’Adua died late Wednesday at the Aso Rock presidential villa in the capital Abuja after a long battle with kidney and heart ailments.

The 58-year-old Yar’Adua had returned to Nigeria in February after three months of medical treatment in Saudi Arabia, but had not been seen in public since. Vice President Goodluck Jonathan took over as Nigeria’s acting president back in February, but he has had little time to turnaround an electoral system known for being plagued by corruption.

Jonathan now becomes president until the next elections scheduled to be held by April 2011. He has declared  seven days of national mourning during which the Nigerian national flag will fly at half mast..

Yar’Adua will be buried in a Muslim ceremony later on Thursday in his home state of Katsina, in the north of the country.
