Barbados Music Awards organiser, Ronnie Morris CEO of Timeless entertainment, call for Rihanna to do a soca song and put the genre on the international stage is sentimental but not practical.
That, my friends is a long time coming. Soca and calypso are still regarded as ethnic music in the international music industry. It’s not mainstream. Therefore it can’t sell many records. Fusions yes. strictly original rhythms no.
On the other hand another Caribbean genre, reggae, has cross over and now caters to an international audience. Even dancehall is becoming popular. Rihanna’s single “Rude Boy,” the latest from her fourth album, “Rated R”, is dancehall and her video, in her words is:
“[It’s] completely different from any other video I’ve shot before. A lot of my videos are really dark and edgy and tough. ‘Rude Boy’ is more playing along the lines from my roots. We used a lot of color, but also the costumes were very Jamaican dance-hall queen type “
The video première Thursday February 11th 2009.
I may be a bit slow this morning (haven’t had breakfast yet) but I don’t get the zebras stuff.
