It is difficult to write about Jewish traitors, but I have the obligation to do so. My life as an American and a Jew is rooted in one miracle: individual liberty and freedom of speech and conscience. We are living in dangerous times, times when men of good will are afraid to speak out. There are some things you cannot say in America today. I will say them anyway.
For years, I have noticed something curious about religion in America, Israel, and elsewhere. When I go into an establishment to pray, I notice how thick the carpet is. The gold and silver on doors and paneling’s. The “honorees” abounding with their plaques and pictures adorning walls and halls. I have prayed in many different shuls (synagogues) throughout the world, and I admit a proclivity toward those humbler, more “hamish” (homey) environs, with the simple wood benches and plain floors. Sixteen Republicans and Democrats wrote a letter demanding an “end to the intimidation and harassment of the Jewish community” in South America’s Opec state, which has fraught relations with Israel. The move came after a group of armed men broke into Caracas’s oldest synagogue last week, overpowered two guards, destroyed religious objects and sprayed antisemitic slogans.
Chávez condemned the attack and the authorities launched an investigation.
“We condemn the actions on the synagogue of Caracas,” he said in a televised speech. He hinted that “oligarchs” opposed to his self-styled socialist revolution were to blame. “It must be asked … who benefits from these violent incidents. It is not the government, nor the people, nor the revolution.”
Jewish groups in Venezuela, however, have accused the government of creating a climate of intolerance through its outspoken denunciations of Israel. Last month Chávez expelled the Israeli ambassador over the invasion of Gaza, which he likened to genocide. Graffiti and posters praising Hamas and Palestinian resistance have sprouted across Caracas, especially in slums such as 23 de Enero, which are bastions of support for the president. They are often accompanied by slogans such as “Jews out”.
The synagogue attackers numbered around 15 and appeared well-organised. They disabled security cameras and reportedly spent five hours breaking into safety boxes, desecrating the Torah and vandalising property. A week earlier the building was sprayed with graffiti linking the swastika to the star of David.
“This is an attack of antisemitic nature,” said Elias Farache of the Venezuelan Israelite Association. “The climate is very tense. We feel threatened, intimidated, attacked.”
The government said those responsible would be brought to justice and called on all Venezuelans to reject the attack. Jews had no reason to feel insecure, it said. A pro-government website that ran an article urging a boycott of Venezuelan Jewish businesses and verbal confrontations with Jewish people was removed yesterday after protests. Chávez has been feted in the Arab world for cutting ties with Israel, and he has forged an alliance with his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has called for Israel to be wiped out.
The Venezuelan leader said there was no trace of antisemitism in a foreign policy that condemned those responsible for inflicting bloodshed and suffering in Gaza.

The victim was buried up to her neck before a group of men in the crowd pelted her head with stones, but according to rights groups, it later emerged that she was only 13 and was raped by three men.
UNICEF said she had been walking some distance and was on her way to visiting her grandmother when she was raped by three men in the Kismayo area.
“Following the assault, she sought protection from the authorities, who then accused her of adultery and sentenced her to death,” the organisation said.
“This is a tragic and deplorable incident. A child was victimised twice – first by the perpetrators of the rape and then by those responsible for administering justice,” said UNICEF Representative for Somalia Christian Balslev-Olesen.
“The incident highlights the extreme vulnerability of girls and women in Somalia,” the statement went on, explaining that sexual and gender-based violence was exacerbated by chronic conflict and displacement.

In what was essentially a he said, she said type of case, Doyle’s attorney Sir Richard Cheltenham during the trial “told the court that his client’s case was all about the betrayal of trust, adding that there was no need to make an example of the convicted rapist.”
Madame Reifer thought otherwise.

The Christians have been the subject of murders and gang rape, whilst their homes and buildings were torched. They decided it was time to defend themselves with arms. Even so as many as 50,000 are still forced to hide out in the jungle away from their tormentors.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, a throwback to the days of the Crusades where persons where forced to convert to Catholicism with a sword held to their necks or forfeit their lives, Christians in Orissa are also forced to convert to Hinduism while axes are held to their throats.

From next month, 12 and 13-year-old girls at all schools in the country will start receiving the jab in a bid to cut deaths from cervical cancer caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), which can be passed on during sex.
The Catholic Church originally raised objections to the jab on the grounds it could encourage promiscuity, but has made a U-turn after reaching an agreement with health and education bosses. The deal means girls getting the HPV jab will not receive any accompanying advice on the need to use condoms to protect themselves from other sexually transmitted diseases.
Health campaigners and parents’ groups last night reacted angrily to the deal, warning that the sexual health of thousands of young Scottish women was being put at risk to avoid a moral backlash from the Catholic Church. Many sexual health experts believe it is essential to give out safe sex advice alongside the jab to make it clear they will remain at risk from other STIs including HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhea. More than half of the 5,000 female chlamydia patients in Scotland last year were under the age of 20.
The vaccine has been shown in trials to be highly effective in stopping cervical cancer caused by HPV if given to girls before they start sexual activity. Such cancers account for about 70% of cases of cervical cancer, which claims about 100 lives in Scotland every year.
When the decision to give the jab was announced by ministers in August 2006, a spokesman for Cardinal Keith O’Brien warned it could be seen by pre-teenage girls as a “green light” for sexual activity. The programme is due to start next month and schools are set to send out consent forms for the scheme from the beginning of September.
The Catholic Church has now decided it will back the programme, with the jabs being available in its own schools. Spokesman Ronnie Convery revealed: “We have been in fruitful discussion with the health and education authorities, and we are satisfied that the programme to be rolled out across the country now is a responsible and ethically appropriate one.”
Director of the Scottish Catholic Education Service (SCES) Michael McGrath added: “We wanted to make sure any support materials were appropriate in the Catholic schools, and we didn’t want HPV and cervical cancer to be linked with artificial contraception. The factual information about the vaccine and cervical cancer are still there, but it doesn’t promote particular kinds of sexual behaviour. We had discussions about it, we looked at various forms of words and came to an agreement. It took some months.”
Scotland on Sunday has examined the leaflets going out to schoolgirls who receive the jab and there is no mention of using condoms to protect against other STIs.
A spokeswoman for the Family Planning Association (FPA) said it was a missed opportunity. Chief executive of the FPA Julie Bentley said: “The HPV vaccination will only protect young women from two strains of HPV leading to cervical cancer. It is critically important that young people understand the need to use condoms to protect them from other STIs.”
Scotland Patients’ Association chairwoman Margaret Watt said: “This message should be highlighted and underlined – please remember this injection doesn’t protect you from sexually transmitted diseases or becoming pregnant.”
Justine Roberts, co-founder of Mumsnet, said parents would be annoyed by the omission. She said: “The moral position is being imposed upon them. It seems a bit archaic to let the Catholic Church decide on this.”
A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “The HPV vaccine is about saving lives and protecting future generations of young girls from cervical cancer.
“Scottish Government officials consulted with many stakeholders and undertook research with parents and girls to ensure the right level of information was included in the leaflet. The Scottish Government is absolutely committed to promoting safer sex, and we are taking forward our sexual health strategy ‘Respect and Responsibility’.”
