Increase H1N1 Cases Health Ministry Answer To Issue Repeat Prescriptions!!! This And That Part 3

www.cbc.bbBarbadians from all walks of life were able to hear Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joy St. John on CBC TV Tuesday night confirming 73 cases of the H1N1 which represent ‘only a fraction of the real figure’ and the overwhelming pressure being place on the polyclinics and the hospital due to the upsurge.

As I sat listening to the lady, waiting for some concrete measures, the Ministry of Health would be undertaking to dealt with the ongoing flu-like symptoms which in some if not all cases would translate into the H1N1 influenza virus, the most the Chief could recommend was increase treatment for high-risk groups. Extending it to children under 5 years and persons with chronic illness like diabetes, asthma and sickle cell. Nothing about isolating persons in a separate facility! Read more of this post

Obama Is Beginnining To Look Out Of His Depth

Barack Obama is an eloquent, brainy and likeable man with a fascinating biography. He is not George Bush. Those are great qualities. But they are not enough to lead America, let alone the world.

Admittedly, the presidential to-do list is terrifying. The economy requires his full-time attention. So does health-care reform. And climate change. Indeed, he deserves praise for spending so much time on thankless foreign policy issues. He is tackling all the big problems: restarting Middle East peace talks, defanging Iran and North Korea and a “reset” of relations with Russia. But none of them are working. Read more of this post

Deadly 3rd Wave Swine Flu Pandemic Coming!!! Is Barbados Ready?

Came across a very curious article on Trinidad & Tobago Express news site yesterday. According to the online piece, Necia Holtzman, a health educator at a private firm specializing in health and infection control sounded the alarm to her countrymen about the devastating impact of the coming swine flu virus this time around.

In Miss Holtzman words, at the recently held International Swine Flu Conference (in which she attended) held in Washington D.C (in August before schools reopened) experts there “have said that the third wave of swine flu should be taken very seriously because they is going to be an extremely severe and virulent attack which could result in a lot of deaths and could follow the pattern of the 1918 Spanish Flu.” Read more of this post

He told reporters at a press conference for the Venice Film Festival earlier this week (ends13Sep09), “Brad Pitt was there (Venice) doing interviews for Inglorious Basterds and I guess people had been asking him, ‘When are you and Angelina Jolie going to get married?’ and he finally just said, ‘Me and Angelina will marry when George Clooney marries his boyfriend!’ “The thing is, you do that in America and they just laugh; you do that overseas and I guess something gets lost in translation, so at eight in the morning, I’m doing interviews and this Italian journalist comes to me and says, ‘Matt, is it true what Brad say (sic)?’ I had no idea what he was talking about so I just said, ‘Of course, yeah.’

Leaky Condoms Angers Kenyans

Kenyan AIDS authorities are struggling to restore public confidence in condoms after an alarming news report recently showed locally stocked brands to be defective.

KTN, a local TV station, showed the condoms, purchased from vendors in the capital, Nairobi, being tested by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). Subjected to an electronic “freedom from holes” test, which involves filling them with water, the condoms sprung leaks.

Chavez Accuses Israel Of Genocide

gaza-strip-warVenezuelan President Hugo Chavez has accused Israel of genocide against the Palestinian people, telling a French newspaper that the bombing of Gaza late last year was an unprovoked attack.

“The question is not whether the Israelis want to exterminate the Palestinians. They’re doing it openly,” Chavez said in an interview with Le Figaro published on Wednesday.

The Venezuelan president, who has just completed a tour of Middle Eastern and Arab countries, brushed aside Israeli assertions that its attack on Gaza was a response to rocket fire from Islamist group Hamas which rules the coastal enclave.

“What was it if not genocide? … The Israelis were looking for an excuse to exterminate the Palestinians,” Chavez said, adding that sanctions should have been slapped on Israel.

Israel launched an offensive against the Gaza Strip on December 27 2008 with the declared aim of curbing rocket fire from the region into southern Israel.

The land, sea and air assault lasted 22 days, and left some 1,300 Palestinians dead, according to medical sources.

Chavez said he recognized Israel’s right to exist, as with all countries, but added that the Jewish state must respect the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

The Venezuelan president said he wanted more clarity from the United States on its foreign policy, adding that he was disappointed by recent U.S. dealings in South America, including the installation of military bases in Colombia.

“Sadly, the arrival of Obama brought with it a lot of hope, but little change,” he said.
