I not too long came from the scene of an accident where I saw a two vehicle smash up on Pine East West Boulevard. Anyone familiar with the main road would know of a food shop in front of M.T.W. I was there between 11.30am – 12.00pm when I heard the sickening impact of a vehicular collision.
Like any concern Bajan I went outside, looking up & down the road, wondering what was going on. Then my eyes saw a crowd gathering further down the road, [still in front of M.T.W], a few yards from the food shop.
This was the first time I had ever came upon any accident where I saw everything before the police & medical personnel arrived on the scene. So it was intriguing but at the same time just like everyone else, one wonder if anyone was hurt or even worse, dead. This was what I saw.
- 2 vehicles: A white Toyota [Fortuna?] van - Z 1088 and a ZR [61] 196
- The ZR was on its side of the road, the Toyota van was on the opposite side on the sidewalk lodged onto the wall.
- The impact severely damaged the front of the ZR van and passenger’s side. Windshield on the ground. The passenger side of the jeep also damaged along with the front though not severely. Parts of the fender was on the ground. Cracks in the windshield.
- Lady in ZR passenger’s seat trapped. Face cover with a bloody washcloth. Top of blouse bloody. Motionless.
- Bloody face of a shirtless youngster, with cuts on shoulders, sitting in the back of the jeep surrounded by people.
- Two passengers in back seat of the ZR seems hurt. One had trouble opening up his eyes.
- My initial assessment of the accident? The driver of the Toyota taxi probably overtake, misjudged the distance, panic, lost control, ran into the ZR on the other side of the road. A problem with the taxi or the driver fell asleep.
Even though the accident was a few mins old, a crowd had gathered in the hot sun. The driver of the ZR was no where to be found initially and the mystery driver of the Toyota jeep did a disappearing act. Or so it seems. Further evidence came to light.
- The ZR driver was found at a bus stop after the arrival of the ambulance, appearing dazed.
- He was carrying 11 passengers. I only saw three in the van.
- The youngster family arrived on the scene. Now the mystery is solved.
The family apparently figure out that the younger was the driver of the Toyota jeep. Worse the vehicle was not his but his godmother’s. Even worse the chap has no license.
I left the scene of the accident with the woman in the ZR being rescued by the jaws of life, the youngster family visibly upset over the loss of the vehicle and the youngster’s last memory was sleeping in a bed. A case of being in shock? I pray the lady don’t lose her legs.
